Villa del Carbón
Go for one night, or as a day trip from Mexico City: 1 h by car, leather shops, a lake or two, and a 17th-century church. Two nights only if you want the lakes.
Villa del Carbón is a Pueblo Mágico in Mexico State, about 60 km northwest of Mexico City on federal highway MEX-5. It is a leather town: boots, jackets, belts and saddles made in workshops you can walk into. Around it are four small lakes and wooded hills for trout fishing, kayaking and short hikes. The centre is compact and walkable, but the lakes are a few kilometres out, so a car or a taxi matters more here than in most Mexican towns. Bus service exists but is slow and indirect; most visitors drive or take an Uber.

Get around
The centro is small and flat: walk it. For the lakes and the hills you need a car, an Uber or a taxi from the sitio near the zócalo; hotel desks call one for you. Distances are short but the roads are rural, so budget 15–30 min per lake.
