Vila Real

Vila Real is the small capital of Trás-os-Montes, 100 km east of Porto on the A4, sitting on a plateau above the Corgo gorge. Its one headline sight, the baroque Casa de Mateus, is 4 km out of town. The city itself is a half-day of noble houses, churches and a pillory, best used as a stop between Porto, the Douro and Bragança rather than a destination on its own.
