Vila Nova de Gaia
Choose Gaia if you want the port cellars, the Cais de Gaia riverfront or a beach bed; choose Porto if you want the old town on foot. Gaia is a 1–2 night add-on, not a replacement.
Vila Nova de Gaia faces Porto across the Douro and holds the port wine cellars, the Cais de Gaia riverfront and the beaches south of the river. Its sights are more residential and spread out than Porto's, and the cellars, the riverfront and the Dom Luís I bridge sit within a 20-minute walk of each other. Two nights is enough for cellars, a riverfront dinner and one beach afternoon; Porto is the better base if you want the old town on foot.

Get around
Walk across the Dom Luís I bridge upper deck from Porto, or take the metro to a Gaia stop near the river (check the current line and stop). Gaia's own sights along the river are walkable; for the beaches use local buses or a taxi, since the metro does not run along the coast. Trains from Vila Nova de Gaia–Devesas station link Lisbon, Braga, Coimbra and Faro.

- Atlantic water is cold year-round and the current is strong at the Douro mouth: swim near lifeguards only.
Gaia is a safe, ordinary city by day and on the riverfront. Watch pickpockets on the bridge and in the metro, keep to lit streets uphill at night, and treat the Atlantic current at the Douro mouth as the real hazard.
