Vihiga
Half a day is enough: visit Mungoma Caves, then continue to Kisumu or Kakamega. Not a base.
Vihiga is a small market town in Western Kenya, the heart of Maragoli country. Most travellers pass through on the way to Kisumu or Kakamega. The main draw is the Mungoma Caves, a challenging guided walk into the ancestral home of the Maragoli people. One hour in the caves, lunch in town, then move on.

Scams and watch-outs
- Mungoma Caves require an experienced guide – do not enter alone.
- Boda-boda drivers may overcharge; agree the fare before you ride.
- Roads can be muddy and slippery during the rainy season.
Vihiga is generally safe. Watch for traffic on the main road and negotiate boda-boda fares upfront. The caves are the only real risk – never go without a guide.
