Corpus Christi, about 200 km south, is the biggest coastal option: an aquarium, a bayfront, a decommissioned aircraft carrier you can tour, and Padre Island National Seashore a short drive further out. This is a full day and you will still leave things undone. Parking near the bayfront is paid in summer.
San Antonio, about 200 km north-west, is the best city day. The River Walk, the Alamo and the Spanish colonial missions are all close together, and the missions are free to enter. Two hours each way plus a full afternoon makes for a long day; many travellers prefer to sleep there instead.
Goliad, about 90 km west, is the history option: a restored Spanish mission and the presidio where Texas independence was declared. It is quiet, cheap and takes half a day.
