Family fun

What works with kids, by age band.

  • Mahé is good with children but expensive: the beach at Beau Vallon is shallow near the shore, and the botanical garden's giant tortoises are the best low-cost activity for young ones (the garden charges a small entry).
  • Check the flag colour and swim only where it is safe; the sun is strong and the sea can have currents, so use shade and a hat between 11:00 and 15:00.
  • Roads are steep and winding with few pavements: hire a car with child seats through a reputable company, or book taxis with a seat (check).
  • Many hotels have family rooms or kids' clubs; small guesthouses may not accept very young children (check).
  • Ferries to Praslin and La Digue take about 1 to 1.5 hours and can be rough in the trade-wind months: bring travel-sickness tablets.
  • Supermarkets in Victoria and near Beau Vallon stock nappies and baby food, at higher prices than at home; bring specialist items.
