Vicksburg is a Mississippi River bluff town of about 22,000 people, 65 km west of Jackson on I-20, built on cotton money and defined by the 47-day Civil War siege that ended on 4 July 1863. The battlefield park is the reason to come; the Old Court House, the Coca-Cola bottling museum and Washington Street fill the rest of a day. It is a one-night stop on the Natchez Trace or a day trip from Jackson, not a multi-day base.
