Vicenza

Vicenza is a mid-sized Veneto city between Verona and Venice, built around the work of Andrea Palladio: a UNESCO-listed group of palaces and villas, with the Teatro Olimpico and the Basilica Palladiana in a compact old town. Most travellers see the centre in a day, add Villa Capra (the Rotonda) on the hill, and use the city as a base for the surrounding villas and hill towns. Two nights covers it without rushing.

Get around
The old town is small and flat: Corso Palladio runs through it and most sights are within 15 minutes on foot. City buses (line 8 to the Rotonda, line 1 to the malls) cover the hills and outskirts; buy tickets before boarding. A car is only useful for the outlying villas and Colli Berici wineries, and the ZTL camera zone covers most of the centre.
