Viana do Castelo

Viana do Castelo is a small Atlantic city at the mouth of the Lima, the capital of Portugal's gold-filigree trade and the base for the Minho coast. The historic centre is compact and walkable; the basilica on Monte de Santa Luzia sits above it, and the beaches and the Lima estuary are 10 minutes out. Two nights covers the city and one beach or hill day; one night is enough if you are moving along the coast.

Get around

Walk the centre: Praça da República, the cathedral and the riverfront are within 15 minutes of each other and much of the old town is pedestrian-only. AVIC and Transcunha city buses cover the rest; the Santa Luzia elevator or a taxi gets you up to the basilica. A car helps for the beaches, Ponte de Lima and the Minho villages.
