Versailles
Versailles, Kentucky
Base here 1 night for Woodford Reserve and the horse farms; 2 nights if you add a second distillery. Without a car, skip it.
Versailles is a small Bluegrass town 20–30 minutes west of Lexington, in the middle of Kentucky bourbon country. Woodford Reserve sits a few km north of the centre, and the surrounding farmland is horse country. There is almost no public transport, so the town works as a car-based overnight stop or a half-day loop from Lexington, not as a walking destination.

Get around
A car is effectively required. The Bluegrass Parkway bypasses town on the south with Exit 68 (KY-33) running north as Main Street; US-60 links Frankfort and I-64 from the north. There is no useful local bus network for visitors, and taxis or rideshare are thin — book returns in advance if you drink at a distillery.

Etiquette, safety and scams

Scams and watch-outs

- Distillery tours sell out on weekends and around race meets: reserve ahead and arrive early.
- Bourbon tasting means no driving after: pick a driver or pre-book a ride.
- Country roads are dark and deer are common at dusk and after dark.
- Summer afternoons are humid; plan indoor tours for midday.
Low street crime in a small town; the real risks are driving after tastings, dark country roads with deer, and summer heat. Use 911 for emergencies.
