Vermillion is a small Missouri River town of about 11,500 people and the home of the University of South Dakota, the state's only law and medical schools. The draw for a visitor is the National Music Museum, one of the world's largest instrument collections, plus Spirit Mound, the hill Lewis and Clark climbed in 1804. Downtown is four blocks of Main Street; the rest is campus, corn and soybean fields. It works as an overnight between Sioux Falls and Sioux City, not as a multi-day base.
