Veracruz
Give Veracruz 2 nights, 3 if you dive or hit Carnival: the port, zócalo and Boca del Río beaches are a compact, low-cost stop, not a beach resort.
Veracruz is Mexico's oldest European-founded mainland city and its main Gulf port, known to locals as simply el Puerto. The historic centre holds two fortresses, several small museums and a zócalo that fills with danzón dancers and Cuban-influenced music after dark. Beaches north of the centre are mediocre; the better sand and hotels sit in neighbouring Boca del Río, 15–20 minutes south. Most travellers use it as a 2-night stop between Mexico City and the Gulf coast, or as a base for Carnival in February.

Get around
The centre is walkable: zócalo to Malecón to the museums is 10–15 minutes on foot. Taxis are cheap and unmetered — agree the fare before you get in. City buses (brightly painted ex-US school buses) run to Boca del Río and Villa del Mar for a few pesos; other routes are hard to follow if you don't know the city. San Juan de Ulúa is close to the port but not walkable from the centre: take a taxi or a tour.

Scams and watch-outs

- San Juan de Ulúa sits in the port zone and cannot be reached on foot — budget a taxi or tour.
- Zamora Park is not a safe place after dark.
- January–March 'nortes' winds can hit 120 km/h and close beaches and port activity.
- June–October is hurricane season; check forecasts before coastal travel.
- Beaches in the city itself have brownish water and persistent vendors; cleaner sand is north at Tecolutla or south at Los Tuxtlas.
Veracruz is a working port city, not a resort: the historic centre and Boca del Río are fine by day and busy at night, but keep to lit streets after dark, avoid Zamora Park at night, and use taxis rather than walking empty blocks. Petty theft and taxi overcharging are the realistic risks; agree fares first.
