Ventspils
Go for 1–2 nights in Jun–Aug if you have a car: beach, castle and open-air museum in a day, plus the narrow-gauge train.
Ventspils is a Baltic port city on Latvia's west coast, 190 km from Riga on the A10/E22. It works as a summer beach stop with a compact, walkable centre, a medieval castle, and a fishing heritage museum. One full day covers the core; two nights let you add the beach and the narrow-gauge railway without rushing. Without a car, buses from Riga take 2.5–4 hours.

Get around
The centre is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. Local buses (Ventspils Reiss) cover the wider city; most stops have route maps. Bikes work well on the flat streets and paths. Street signs are unreliable — many point at 90° angles regardless of the actual direction — so carry a map (free at the Tourism Information Centre, Dārza iela 6).
See and do
Known for
- Blue Flag beach and dune belt
- Livonian Order Castle
- Seaside Open-Air Museum and anchor collection

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, 'labdien'; avoid: Hugging strangers
- Flowers: Odd numbers; avoid: Even numbers (funerals)
- Homes: Shoes off; avoid: Arriving empty-handed
- Language: Start in Latvian or English; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks Russian
- History: Listen; avoid: Joking about the Soviet period
Scams and watch-outs
- Street direction signs are often misleading; use a map or phone.
- Ventspils has no passenger rail service; nearest stations with trains are Tukums and Liepāja, about 120 km away.
- Budget accommodation is limited; book summer weekends ahead.
- Many seasonal attractions (narrow-gauge railway, waterpark) run May/June–September only.
Ventspils is a small, low-crime city and generally safe for tourists. The real issues are cold Baltic water and strong currents at the beach, uneven cobblestones, and limited late-night transport — check bus times before an evening out.
