Ventotene
Go for 2–3 nights in shoulder season (May–Jun or Sep) for swimming, Roman ruins and quiet evenings; skip July–August when the island is packed.
Ventotene is a tiny Pontine island, 3 km long and 800 m wide, with 700 permanent residents. Its main draws are clear-water swimming, Roman ruins (including the prison where emperors exiled rivals), and the abandoned prison island of Santo Stefano. The island has few cars and no nightlife beyond a piazza bar. Two nights give you a full day for swimming and a boat trip to Santo Stefano; three nights let you slow down.
