Venice in May: what to expect

May is the month Venice stops being a cold city. Days reach roughly 20–24 °C, nights stay near 12–14 °C, and the rain that soaked April thins out to a handful of wet days, usually short afternoon showers rather than all-day drizzle. Daylight runs past 20:30 by the end of the month, which is what makes May worth the price: you can walk the Zattere or the Fondamenta della Misericordia after dinner in a light jacket.

The lagoon moderates everything. Sea breezes keep the historic centre a degree or two cooler than Mestre or Padua, and mornings can still feel damp and cool until about 10am. Mosquitoes wake up in May, especially near Cannaregio canals and on the Lido — pack repellent if you plan to sit outside at dusk.

Acqua alta, the winter flooding of Piazza San Marco, is rare by May; the MOSE barriers now close the lagoon inlets during the highest tides, which has cut the worst events. Check the tide forecast if a strong southerly wind is blowing.

May is the front edge of Venice's high season and behaves like it. Weekends and the 1 May long weekend bring the heaviest day-tripper flow into San Marco, the Rialto and the vaporetto line 1; midweek is noticeably calmer. Cruise calls add a morning surge that thins by late afternoon. If you want the Piazza nearly to yourself, be there before 8am — by 10am it is a queue.

Hotel rates run at or near their yearly peak. Expect to pay a clear premium over March and November, and to find the good mid-range places in Cannaregio, Dorsoduro and Santa Croce booked out four to eight weeks ahead for weekends. Booking direct with a small hotel often beats the platforms in May. Restaurant prices barely move, but the terrace tables along the Grand Canal are the ones that cost.

Venice's day-tripper access fee applies on selected peak days through the season; the calendar changes each year, so check the official city page before you travel and pay in advance if your date is listed.

The month opens with 1 May (Festa del Lavoro), a national holiday: museums and shops may run reduced hours, and the long weekend is one of the busiest of the spring. Book trains and beds for that weekend first.

Two Venetian events usually fall in May. The Festa della Sensa, on the Sunday after Ascension, revives the old ceremony of the Doge marrying the sea: a waterborne procession to the Lido and a market in the lagoon. The Vogalonga, a non-competitive rowing rally, fills the canals with hundreds of traditional boats — a good day to be on a bridge rather than in a vaporetto. Both dates move with the church calendar, so confirm them locally.

Late May also brings the build-up to the Biennale season and the start of the summer concert programme in churches and palazzi. Check individual venues for dates rather than assuming a fixed schedule.

May rewards the outer city. The Lido beaches are open for walking and cycling even if the water is still cold, and the boat ride out is a break from the crowds. Murano and Burano are at their best in warm light, and Torcello's basilica and empty lanes are a genuine contrast to San Marco.

In the historic centre, use the mornings for the classic sights and the afternoons for the quieter sestieri. Dorsoduro's Zattere is the place for a long, sunny waterfront walk; Cannaregio's Fondamenta della Misericordia fills with locals at aperitivo time. The Giardini and the Biennale pavilions are pleasant in May before the summer heat.

If you have a spare day, Padua and Treviso are short train rides and both are green and uncrowded in May. Verona and the lake country are further but doable as a long day.

Pack for a warm day and a cool evening: light layers, a thin jacket or cardigan, and comfortable shoes for cobbles and bridges. A compact umbrella or rain shell covers the May showers without weight. Bring mosquito repellent for canal-side evenings, sunscreen for the boat decks, and a refillable bottle — Venice's public fountains are drinkable.

If you plan to enter churches, carry something to cover shoulders and knees; the basilicas enforce this more strictly as the season gets busy. A small day bag beats a suitcase on vaporetti and over bridges.

April is cooler and wetter but cheaper and quieter, with the Easter period as the exception. June is warmer and busier still, with the first real beach weather on the Lido. March is the value option: fewer crowds, lower prices, unpredictable rain. If your dates are flexible, compare the three before you commit to May's peak rates.
