Venice in December: what to expect

December is the start of Venice's cold, damp winter. Days are short and often grey, with a mix of dry, crisp mornings and wet, windy spells coming off the lagoon. Fog is common in the Po Valley and can reach the city, softening the light but cutting visibility.

The bigger local factor is acqua alta, the seasonal high tide that spills onto the lowest parts of the city. It is most frequent from October to December, though the MOSE barriers at the lagoon inlets now hold back the worst events. Expect some water in Piazza San Marco and along the lowest calli on a handful of mornings, usually for an hour or two around the peak tide. Raised walkways go up, and most of the city stays dry.

Snow is possible but rare and rarely settles for long. Wind chill off the water makes it feel colder than the numbers suggest, especially on a vaporetto deck.

The month splits in two. From 1 to about 20 December, Venice is as empty as it gets: hotel rates are near their annual low, museum queues are short, and you can walk the Rialto and San Marco without much pushing. This is the window for a cheap city break.

From around 24 December to 6 January, the city fills for the holidays. Rates roughly double, restaurants take fewer walk-ins, and the main sights get busy again in the middle of the day. Book beds and any timed museum tickets before you travel if your dates fall in that stretch.

Day-tripper flows are lighter than in spring and autumn, so the afternoon crush around San Marco is milder than in April or September.

The Christmas season starts officially on 8 December, the Immaculate Conception, a national holiday. Lights and decorations go up around then, and the city's nativity scenes and small Christmas markets open in the weeks after.

Christmas Day and St Stephen's Day (25–26 December) are the quietest days of the year for sights: most museums and many shops and restaurants close on the 25th, so plan a walk and a booked lunch rather than a gallery. New Year's Eve brings a crowd to Piazza San Marco for the countdown and fireworks over the basin — check the current programme locally, as it changes year to year.

Classical concerts in churches run most evenings through the month, and La Fenice has a winter opera season — check dates and book ahead for the holiday period.

December suits indoor Venice. The Doge's Palace, the Basilica di San Marco, the Accademia and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection are all short visits that keep you out of the rain, and queues are short outside the holiday week. Book the Basilica and any timed entry in advance if you are there between Christmas and Epiphany.

For outdoor time, pick the quieter sestieri: Cannaregio and the northern edge of the city, the Zattere waterfront, and the Giudecca. A vaporetto ride down the Grand Canal is a good cold-weather sightseeing move — sit inside, or wrap up and take the front of line 1 or 2.

The lagoon islands are at their quietest. Murano's glass furnaces and Torcello's basilica are worth the trip; the Lido is largely shut down for the season, so treat it as a walk rather than a beach day.

Think cold, wet and dark by 16:30. Layers work better than one heavy coat: thermal base, jumper, windproof and waterproof outer shell. Waterproof shoes with grip matter more than style — the stone pavements are slick, and you may be stepping through shallow water.

Add a compact umbrella, gloves, a hat and a scarf for the vaporetto decks. A small torch or phone light helps on unlit side streets in the evening. If acqua alta is forecast, disposable overshoes or waterproof trousers save a day.

November is wetter and quieter, with the highest acqua alta risk of the year and the cheapest hotel rates. January is colder but often clearer, with the winter sales starting early in the month and Carnival still a few weeks off. February brings Carnival, which fills the city for about ten days before Lent and pushes prices back up.

If you want Venice with better odds of dry, mild weather, aim for late April to June or September to October instead.
