Vélez-Blanco
A half-day stop for the castle and cave art, or a quiet overnight if you want to hike in the Sierra María-Los Vélez. Not a base.
Vélez-Blanco is a whitewashed hill town of about 2,000 people in the Almería province, best known for its 16th-century Fajardo Castle and the nearby Cave of the Signboards, which holds the Indalo — a Neolithic rock painting that became the symbol of Almería. The town itself is quiet, with a few churches and a convent, and the surrounding landscape of desert and mountains is the real draw. Most travellers pass through on a day trip from Vélez-Rubio or as a stop between Murcia and Granada.
