Vaudreuil-Dorion
Skip as a base unless you have a car and want cheap off-island beds: 1 night, or a half-day for Old Vaudreuil's three heritage houses.
Vaudreuil-Dorion is a Greater Montreal suburb of about 38,000 where Autoroutes 20, 30 and 40 meet, on the south shore of Lac des Deux Montagnes. There is no single headline sight: the draw is a compact Old Vaudreuil strip of 18th- and 19th-century houses, a regional museum, a winery and cheaper beds than downtown Montreal, 30–45 minutes away by commuter train or car. Most travellers pass through; a night makes sense if you are driving the Windsor–Quebec corridor, visiting the Vaudreuil-Soulanges wine route, or using it as a low-cost Montreal base with a car.

Get around
The city is spread out and split by freeways, so a car is the realistic way to cover it. Exo Route 11 commuter trains serve Vaudreuil and Dorion stations from Montreal, and CIT La Presqu'Île local buses link the stations to surrounding streets, but frequencies are commuter-oriented. Taxis and rideshare fill the gaps; walking works only inside Old Vaudreuil.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances between Old Vaudreuil, Dorion and route Harwood are too long to walk; plan a car or taxi.
- Exo trains run mainly for commuters: check the last evening departure before you rely on it.
- The Oka–Hudson ferry runs spring to fall only; in winter the lake freezes and ice crossing is weather-dependent — never assume it.
- Vineyard tastings are seasonal (mid-Jun to mid-Oct) and often weekend-only: confirm before driving out.
- Sales tax is added at the till; posted prices are before tax.
A low-crime suburban city; the real risks are driving (freeway interchanges, winter ice) and long unlit stretches between districts at night. 911 for emergencies, 811 for health advice.
