Varkaus
One night is enough: mechanical music museum, Taipale canal and the water-tower café, then push on to Kuopio or Savonlinna.
Varkaus is a small industrial town on Lake Saimaa in North Savonia, about 20,000 people, built around paper mills and a canal. It is a road and rail stop on the Highway 5 corridor between Helsinki and Kuopio, not a destination in itself. Come for one night, or as a half-day break on a longer Lakeland drive, and pair it with Linnansaari National Park if you have a boat or a car.

Get around
The centre is small and walkable. A few local bus lines run in town; Matkahuolto and the national route planner cover regional buses. Taxis are booked by app (Valopilkku, 02 Taksi, Taksi EHT, Taksini) rather than hailed. A car is the practical way to reach Taipale canal, Linnansaari and the Joroinen sights.

- There are no scheduled flights to Varkaus airport; the nearest useful airports are Kuopio, Jyväskylä, Joensuu and Savonlinna, all at least an hour by road.
- Linnansaari National Park is island terrain reached by boat or canoe; without your own boat you depend on the seasonal service or a taxi boat.
- Winter roads are icy and headlights are always on; winter tyres are required Dec–Feb.
Varkaus is a quiet, safe small town; the real risks are winter ice and darkness, moose and deer on Highway 5 at dusk, and cold water if you go out on Saimaa without a life jacket.
