Varese
Give Varese one full day plus a second for Sacro Monte and the lake; sleep in the centre, not near the station, and skip it if you only have Milan time.
Varese is a hillside city of about 80,000 people in Lombardy, 50 km north-west of Milan and close to the Swiss border. It works as a one- or two-night base between Milan, Lake Maggiore and Lake Como, or as a day trip by train. The draw is the Sacro Monte UNESCO complex above town, the villas and gardens, and the lake at Schiranna; the centre is small and walkable.
