Building the trip, step by step
Book the international flight into Port Vila first, then domestic flights, then beds. Domestic seats on the Tanna and Santo routes are the constraint in the dry season, and accommodation on Tanna is limited, so flights before hotels saves replanning. Day 1–3, Port Vila: Market House, the Vanuatu National Museum and Cultural Centre, the waterfront, and a day trip to Mele Cascades or around the Efate ring road. This is also where you buy anything you forgot, change money and sort a local SIM.
Day 4–5, Tanna: fly over, then an afternoon or dusk trip to Mount Yasur. Two nights means two attempts at the crater, which matters because cloud, ash or an alert-level change can close access. Use the spare half-day for a kastom village visit or the Lenakel market.
Day 6, back to Port Vila: one night near the airport or in town, a last swim, and an easy transfer the next morning. Do not schedule a same-day domestic-to-international connection; a delayed island flight would cost you the long-haul seat.
With 10 days, add Espiritu Santo after Tanna: fly back through Port Vila and on to Luganville, then 4 nights for Champagne Beach, the blue holes, Million Dollar Point and the SS President Coolidge if you dive. With 14, add Malekula for the Nambas villages and the Maskelynes, or Ambrym for the Marum and Benbow craters between July and September. In April to June, swap that third island for a Pentecost land-diving trip.
Three weeks lets you keep the 14-day spine and add Nguna and Pele for the community marine reserves off north Efate, or a Gaua and Banks Islands leg if you are comfortable with small-aircraft schedules. Every extra island costs at least a flight pair and a buffer day.

Pentecost land diving happens in season only, roughly April to June, so a 14-day plan built around it looks different from one built around diving.
Costs add up on the flights, not the beds. Domestic return fares between Port Vila and the outer islands are the biggest variable, and outer-island lodges often charge more per night than Port Vila.
