Vanimo
Go for 2–3 nights if you surf (Sep–Mar) or want a border-town day trip from Jayapura; otherwise skip — the town has few sights beyond the beach and the surf breaks.
Vanimo is the capital of West Sepik (Sandaun) province, a short drive from the Indonesian border. Its main draw is surf: consistent waves from September to March with breakers up to 3 m. The town itself is a service centre for logging and cross-border shopping, with basic accommodation and limited supplies. Most visitors come for the surf or as a stop between Jayapura and the Sepik region.

- Surf breaks are for experienced surfers only — waves up to 3 m.
- Road from Wewak is rough; flights are more reliable.
- Check the security situation before travelling; ask your lodge for local advice.
Vanimo is generally safe for visitors during the day, but carry only what you need and ask your lodge about current conditions. The main risks are rough roads and limited medical facilities.
