Give Vang Vieng 2 nights: one day for a lagoon and cave by bike or scooter, one for kayaking or tubing, then take the 1-hour train onward.
Vang Vieng is a small riverside town under karst cliffs, about an hour from Vientiane by train on the Laos–China railway. The old tubing scene is quieter than it was, and the draw now is outdoors: lagoons, caves, kayaking, ballooning and sunset viewpoints. Two nights covers it; three if you want a rest day.

Get around
The centre is walkable. Bicycles rent for about 60,000 kip a day, e-scooters about 150,000 kip and motorbikes about 170,000–200,000 kip (2026 estimate). Tuk-tuks cost about 10,000 kip per person in town; the Xanh app also works. Rental shops usually keep your passport and hold you liable for damage, so photograph the bike first.

Scams and watch-outs
- Riverside swings and slides have been removed for safety; do not swim or tube after heavy rain, when the current is fast.
- Do not drink spirits at riverside bars: methanol poisoning is a real risk. Stick to bottled beer.
- Tubing: keep hold of your tube at bars or you lose part of the deposit; tubes must be back by 18:00.
- Tuk-tuk drivers often give wrong change; agree the fare and pay with small notes.
- Food or drinks labelled "happy" or "special" contain drugs, and plain-clothes police fine tourists.
- Roads to the lagoons are dirt and can flood in the wet season; wear shoes with grip for cave and viewpoint steps.
Vang Vieng is a small town and petty crime is rare; the real risks are the river, the roads and the drink. Do not swim or tube in fast, muddy water, wear a helmet on a scooter, and avoid spirits at riverside bars.
