Vanderhoof
One night as a Highway 16 or VIA Rail stop, not a destination: the museum and riverside park fill an afternoon, and Fort St. James is the real reason to pause.
Vanderhoof is a farming and forestry town of about 4,400 people on the Yellowhead Highway, in one of the few flat stretches of northern British Columbia. It sits 1.5 hours by bus and 2 hours by train from Prince George, and most travellers use it as a break on the long haul to Prince Rupert or Smithers. The Community Museum and the birding at Riverside Park are worth an afternoon; Fort St. James, 60 km north, is the strongest single reason to stop.

Get around
The town is compact, but the museum, trails and Fort St. James are spread out; a car is the practical way to reach them. BC Transit route 161 runs to Prince George and Burns Lake on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays only. Taxis cover short hops in town.
