The detail
Portland International is the region's main gateway, with nonstop flights across the United States and a handful of international routes. From the terminal, the drive north on I-5 or I-205 crosses the Columbia River into Vancouver; downtown is a short hop off the freeway.
TriMet's MAX Red Line leaves the airport and runs into central Portland. It does not continue into Vancouver, Washington, so you would need to change to a bus for the river crossing. That combination is cheap but slow with bags, and it is not the right pick if you land late.
Vancouver has its own small airfield, Pearson Field, but it handles general aviation rather than scheduled airline service. Do not book expecting to land there.
