Van Nuys
Skip Van Nuys as a sightseeing base: stay 0–1 night only if you need the Amtrak/Metrolink stop or a cheap Valley bed near Burbank airport.
Van Nuys is the civic and commercial middle of the San Fernando Valley, not a sightseeing district. It is a working neighbourhood of car lots, offices and grid streets, with two real draws: a free Japanese garden and the Amtrak/Metrolink station. Most travellers sleep in Burbank, Studio City or North Hollywood and pass through. Come here for the garden, the golf courses, the late-night ramen and the train.

Get around
This is a car neighbourhood: the Valley grid is wide and spread out, and buses are slow. Metro buses run on every major street, and the G Line (the busway formerly called the Orange Line) crosses the Valley east–west from North Hollywood to Chatsworth; in North Hollywood it connects to Metro Rail. Rideshare is the practical fallback for short hops.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Sepulveda Blvd motels are hit-and-miss; check recent photos and the exact block before booking.
- Summer Valley heat: plan the Japanese Garden and golf for the morning.
- The Japanese Garden keeps limited days and hours — check the official site before you go.
Van Nuys is a working Valley neighbourhood, not a resort district: daytime errands and the garden are fine, but avoid walking the Sepulveda motel strip alone at night and keep bags out of sight in parked cars.
