Van Horn
Stay one night as an I-10 stopover, or skip it: the museum and two steakhouses are the whole town, and Marfa is 74 mi south.
Van Horn is a small West Texas county seat on Interstate 10, between El Paso and Fort Stockton, and the turn-off for Marfa, Alpine and Guadalupe Mountains National Park. It is a bed-and-fuel stop with a handful of sights, not a destination in itself. Most travellers pass through in a night or use it as a cheaper base for the Big Bend country.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer daytime heat is extreme: carry water and do not walk far in the afternoon.
- Cell coverage is patchy on the empty stretches of I-10 and TX-54; download offline maps.
- Fuel up before heading south to Marfa or north to Guadalupe Mountains: services are sparse.
- Some motels and restaurants close early or seasonally; call ahead if arriving after about 21:00.
A quiet small town; the real risks are desert heat, long empty drives and wildlife on the road at night. Lock your car and keep water with you. For consular help, contact your own embassy or consulate; use your government's official locator to find the nearest office.
