Valencia in April: what to expect

April sits in Valencia's sweet spot: the winter chill has gone, the summer humidity has not arrived, and the city gets long, bright days. Expect daytime highs near 20 °C and evening lows around 10 °C, so a light jacket or sweater is still useful after sunset. Rain is possible but usually short-lived — a few wet days across the month rather than sustained grey spells.

The Mediterranean is warming but still cool, around 16–17 °C, which is fine for a paddle or a quick dip for hardy swimmers but not for long sessions. The bigger draw in April is the light: 7–8 hours of sunshine a day makes the Turia gardens, the City of Arts and Sciences and the old town pleasant to walk without the summer heat.

Wind can pick up on the beachfront at Malvarrosa, and mornings are often cooler than the afternoon forecast suggests. Layer up rather than commit to one outfit.

April is a high-demand month in Valencia, largely because of Easter. Holy Week (Semana Santa) brings processions, Spanish families on holiday and a surge in hotel rates, especially around the long weekend. If Easter falls in April, expect the first week to be the busiest and most expensive; if it falls in March, April is calmer.

Outside the Easter window, crowds are medium: busy at weekends and around the City of Arts and Sciences, quieter on weekday mornings. Prices for hotels and short-term rentals are medium-to-high, with the best value in the second half of the month. Book accommodation and any popular restaurant at least a few weeks ahead if you are travelling over Easter.

The Fallas festival itself runs 15–19 March, so April visitors miss the main event but may catch the tail end of the city's festive mood and some post-festival events.

The headline event is Holy Week (Semana Santa), with religious processions in the old town and around the city. Dates move each year, so check the local calendar. If Easter falls in April, the city fills with visitors and many shops close on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Other April fixtures include the Valencia Marathon and various spring cultural events; check the city's official tourism calendar for exact dates. The Fallas museum and the city's museums stay open through the month, and the Turia gardens host outdoor activities as the weather warms.

April is ideal for the city's outdoor sights. Walk the Turia gardens, the old riverbed turned green space, and visit the City of Arts and Sciences complex, which is at its best in mild weather. The Central Market and the Lonja are good rainy-day options, and the cathedral and Miguelete tower give you the classic view over the rooftops.

For a beach day, head to Malvarrosa or Patacona — quiet in April, with a few bars open. If you want a day trip, the Albufera lagoon south of the city is good for birdwatching and boat trips, and the nearby town of Buñol is known for its August tomato festival but is a pleasant walk in spring. Further afield, trains run to Alicante and Castellón for a change of scene.

Book the City of Arts and Sciences and any popular museum online if you are visiting over Easter, when queues are longest.

Pack for mild days and cool evenings: light layers, a waterproof jacket or compact umbrella for the occasional shower, comfortable walking shoes for the city's cobbles and long promenades, and sunscreen — April sun is strong enough to burn. A swimsuit is optional; the sea is cool but some hotels have heated pools.

If you plan to visit churches or processions during Holy Week, bring something to cover shoulders and knees. A small daypack is useful for day trips.

March is cooler and includes the Fallas festival (15–19 March), which is spectacular but makes the city very busy. May is warmer and arguably the best month for the beach, with sea temperatures rising and crowds still manageable. June brings beach season and higher prices.

If you want the best balance of weather and value, late April and May are strong choices; if you want the festival atmosphere, aim for March.
