Vaasa is a small bilingual west-coast city, capital of Ostrobothnia, where about a quarter of people speak Swedish. The rebuilt 19th-century centre sits on the Gulf of Bothnia and most sights are within walking distance of the market square. It works as a one- or two-night stop between Turku and Oulu, or as a ferry hop to Umeå in Sweden.
