Airports in Uzbekistan: which one to fly into

Uzbekistan has one airport that matters for most arrivals and a handful of regional ones that matter for specific routes. Tashkent handles the bulk of long-haul and connecting traffic, so almost every first trip starts there. The others are useful when they cut a long drive or a backtrack, not as a general entry point.

Tashkent (TAS) is the safe default. It is about 8 km from the centre, which is 20–45 minutes by car depending on traffic, and it feeds directly into the city's metro, app taxis and the rail network. If your plan is Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva in that order, land at TAS, sleep, then take the Afrosiyob high-speed train south.

Urgench (UGC) is the airport for Khiva, about 35 minutes away by car. It is worth choosing if Khiva is your first stop or if you want to skip the long rail leg back from Khiva to Tashkent. Domestic flights from Tashkent take about 1 h 40 and cost roughly UZS 600,000–1,200,000; schedules shift by season and sell out around holidays, so book early.

Samarkand (SKD) and Bukhara (BHK) have international service that is limited or planned rather than reliable year-round (check). Treat them as a bonus if a flight lines up with your dates, and build the trip around TAS otherwise. Domestic connections between these cities and Tashkent exist but are thin; the train is usually the better answer.

Whichever airport you pick, the arrival routine is the same. Have your passport and, if required for your nationality, a visa or e-visa ready before the desk. Change a small amount of cash or use an ATM for the taxi, then switch to an app taxi rather than a driver who approaches you inside the terminal.

Book the Afrosiyob train the day seats open for spring and autumn travel; it sells out days ahead and the passport name on the ticket must match your passport exactly.

Use Yandex Go for the airport run instead of a street taxi. App fares across Tashkent run about UZS 20,000–60,000, while drivers waiting at arrivals quote tourist prices.

Keep small notes for the first hour: a SIM card, a bottle of water and a taxi. Tap water is not safe to drink; bottled water costs UZS 3,000–6,000 in shops and boiled tea is always safe.

If you land late, confirm your hotel has a staffed 24-hour desk. The night you arrive decides whether anyone is there to let you in.

Check your travel insurance covers the domestic flight and train legs, not just the international one, before you commit to a tight schedule.

Flight schedules to and from Uzbekistan change with the season, and airlines add or drop routes between years. Confirm your route and terminal close to departure rather than months ahead.

Domestic carriers include Uzbekistan Airways and low-cost operators; seats on holiday dates go quickly. If a domestic flight is the only way to make your plan work, book it before you book hotels.

Airport transfer times are estimates and traffic in Tashkent can double them at peak hours. Leave a buffer if you are connecting to a train on the same day.
