Give Uwajima one night if you are already in west Shikoku: castle, Taga Shrine and bull sumo on a match day. Otherwise skip it.
Uwajima is a small west-coast Shikoku town at the end of the JR Yosan line, 75–80 min from Matsuyama by limited express. Its pull is narrow and specific: one of Japan's few original castle keeps, an old fertility shrine, and bull sumo on five tournament months. Two nights is the ceiling; one night plus a Matsuyama base covers it.

The centre is compact and the main sights are walkable from the station area. Bicycles rent by the hour from the tourist office across from the station. For the coast and Sunokawa you need a bus, taxi or car.

Scams and watch-outs
- Bull sumo runs only in January, April, July, August and October; matches start at noon and last about 3 h. Buy tickets ahead.
- Taga Shrine's Dekoboko Shindō museum bans minors and charges extra to photograph inside.
- The youth hostel closes on Sundays.
- Summer is hot and humid; the rainy season runs through June into mid-July.
A quiet, low-risk town. The real issues are summer heat, thin late-night transport, and sights that close early: plan the day around daylight.
