Utsunomiya

Stop for one night for gyoza and the Oya stone quarries, or skip it: from Tokyo it is 50 min by Shinkansen, but the sights are thin.
Utsunomiya is the capital of Tochigi and a Shinkansen stop 50 minutes from Tokyo, best known as Japan's gyoza city. Most of what a visitor wants sits within a 15-minute walk of the station; the Oya stone area is a half-day bus trip. It works as a single night on the way to Nikko, not as a multi-day base.

Get around
Most hotels, malls and gyoza restaurants are within 15 minutes on foot of Utsunomiya Station. Buses leave mainly from the west exit (fares from about ¥200); the light rail tram runs from the east exit across the Kinu River. Taxis wait on the west side, first floor, fares from about ¥1,000.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Carry ID at all times: police can ask foreign visitors for passport or visa checks.
- Some jazz bars and cocktail bars charge a cover of up to ¥4,000 plus drinks from ¥1,000; ask before you sit.
- The Oya History Museum and Oya temples are a bus ride out of town: check the last return bus before you go.
- The Tochinoki overnight bus from Osaka and Kyoto has been suspended at times; check before relying on it.
One of Japan's safer cities; incidents are rare. Carry ID for police checks, watch traffic and bicycles at night, and ask about cover charges before entering jazz or cocktail bars.
