Utqiagvik (still called Barrow by many) is the northernmost town in the United States, 480 km north of the Arctic Circle on the Arctic Ocean, with about 4,500 residents, mostly Iñupiat. There are no roads in: you fly from Anchorage, Fairbanks or Deadhorse, and everything in town costs 2–5 times lower-48 prices. Come for the midnight sun, the Iñupiat Heritage Center, the whale-bone arch and Point Barrow — not for a resort.

Get around
The town is small and flat, so walking works year-round with proper layers; in deep winter you can cross the frozen lagoons, but ask locals first in early winter. Taxis are the practical option for groups and run a fixed in-town rate; the city bus runs weekdays only and charges per person.
