Uto
Skip Uto unless you have a specific reason to stop: the Jizō Festival in August or a quiet half-day between Kumamoto and Yatsushiro. One hour is enough to see the station area and buy utomochi.
Uto is a small city of 36,000 on the JR Kagoshima Line, 20 minutes south of Kumamoto. It has no major sights that demand a detour. Most travellers pass through on the way to Amakusa or Yatsushiro. The one event worth timing for is the Uto Jizō Festival (23–24 August). Otherwise, treat it as a lunch stop for utomochi (rice cakes with red bean paste) and move on.
