Ustroń

Go for 1–2 nights as a spa-and-hiking base in the Beskids, not as a first Poland trip: 1 h 40 min by train from Katowice, chairlift open year-round.

Ustroń is a small mountain resort in the Silesian Beskids, 82 km south of Katowice, where the Vistula rises. It is a spa town first and a sightseeing town second: sanatorium architecture, a year-round chairlift up Czantoria, short forest trails and a wildlife park. Two nights covers the town and one hill; one night is enough if you only want the chairlift and the spa park.

Get around

Regional trains from Katowice stop four times in the valley (Ustroń, Zdrój, Brzegi, Polana), so rail covers the length of the town. Local Wispol buses link the centre with Bielsko-Biała, Cieszyn and Wisła. A dozen taxi firms work the valley; Uber is available. Most of the centre is walkable.

  • Trains are roughly every two hours: check the last return before an afternoon hike.
  • The Stara Zagroda open-air museum has been closed in recent seasons: check before walking there.
  • Ski areas are small and not linked; they suit beginners and nervous intermediates, not strong skiers.
  • Mountain weather turns fast above 800 m: carry a shell even on a clear morning.

Ustroń is a low-crime resort town and safe to walk at night. The real risks are mountain weather, unmarked trail junctions above 800 m and icy lanes in winter: tell someone your route and carry the GOPR number.
