How to get to Uruguay: airports, flights and border crossings

Carrasco International Airport (MVD) is Uruguay's only long-haul gateway and sits about 20 km east of central Montevideo, roughly 30–45 minutes by car or bus depending on traffic. It handles flights from Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Santiago, Lima, Panama City and Madrid, plus seasonal routes. If your first stop is Montevideo, Colonia, Punta del Este or the Atlantic coast, MVD is the simplest choice.

There is no direct long-haul flight from the US, UK, Canada, Australia or New Zealand to Montevideo. Most travellers connect through Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Panama City, Lima, Madrid or Santiago. Total journey time from the US east coast is typically 12–16 hours including a connection; from the UK or Europe 14–18 hours; from Australia or New Zealand 24–30 hours with two stops.

Punta del Este has a small airport (PDP) with seasonal regional flights, mostly from Buenos Aires and São Paulo in summer. It is convenient for the coast but not a substitute for MVD for most trips.

There are no nonstop flights from North America, Europe, Oceania or Asia to Uruguay, so every route involves at least one connection. The table below gives typical total travel times including layovers; exact times depend on the connection you book.

The ferry across the Río de la Plata is the most common way travellers reach Uruguay, and it is often the reason they come: Buenos Aires to Colonia del Sacramento takes about 1 hour on the fast boat, while the longer crossing to Montevideo takes roughly 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes. Buquebus and Colonia Express are the main operators, with several departures a day.

Colonia is the better arrival point if you want the UNESCO old town first; Montevideo is better if the capital is your base. Boats leave from the Buenos Aires terminal near Puerto Madero, and you should arrive at least an hour before departure for check-in and immigration. Book ahead for weekends, holidays and the January–February peak, when ferries sell out.

There are also river crossings from Carmelo and Nueva Palmira on the Argentine side, useful if you are combining Uruguay with the Tigre delta or Rosario.

From Brazil, the main crossings are Chuy in the east, on the road between Porto Alegre and Punta del Este, and Rivera in the north, on the route from Porto Alegre toward Salto and the interior. Both are busy commercial crossings with duty-free shops on the Uruguayan side. Buses run from Porto Alegre, Florianópolis and other southern Brazilian cities.

From Argentina, the busiest crossings are Fray Bentos and Salto on the Uruguay River, plus the bridge at Paysandú. Long-distance buses connect Buenos Aires with Montevideo, Colonia, Salto and other cities; the trip to Montevideo takes around 8–10 hours overnight. Border formalities are usually straightforward for US, UK, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and EU passport holders, but queues can be long at peak times.

Citizens of the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and most EU countries do not need a visa for tourism stays of up to 90 days. You need a passport valid for at least six months beyond arrival, and proof of onward travel may be requested. Check the current rules before you book, since they can change.

Uruguay requires no specific vaccinations for entry from most countries, but routine vaccinations should be up to date. Yellow fever vaccination may be required if you are arriving from a country with transmission risk. Travel insurance is not mandatory but is strongly recommended, especially for the long ferry and bus journeys and for medical care outside Montevideo.

On arrival, expect immigration and customs checks at MVD, at ferry terminals and at land borders. Duty-free allowances apply, and agricultural products are restricted. Bring a card or cash in Uruguayan pesos or US dollars for taxis and buses from the airport; ATMs are available in the terminal but can be busy.

From Carrasco, taxis and remises take about 30–45 minutes to central Montevideo and cost roughly UYU 1,200–1,800 (about US$30–45) in 2026. Airport buses run to the city centre and the Tres Cruces terminal for a few hundred pesos. Rideshare apps operate in Montevideo but pickup at the airport can be restricted; check on arrival.

If you are heading straight to Colonia or Punta del Este, buses from the airport or from Tres Cruces are usually the cheapest option, with taxis and private transfers faster but more expensive. For the ferry, go to the Buquebus terminal in Montevideo or the Colonia terminal, not the airport.

Uruguay is small and well connected internally, so once you arrive, buses and cars cover the distances quickly. The ferry from Buenos Aires is the single most useful route for a combined Argentina–Uruguay trip, and it is worth booking early in summer.

If you are coming from Brazil, the Chuy and Rivera crossings are the practical choices; from Argentina, Fray Bentos, Salto and Paysandú are the main road entries. Always carry your passport, and keep a digital copy.
