Uruguay is one of the more expensive countries in South America, so a budget trip here is less about finding dirt-cheap prices and more about choosing where and when you spend. The two levers that matter most are season and location: January on the Atlantic coast is the single most expensive week of the year, while the same coast in April or November, and the interior at any time, costs a fraction of that.
Start with the shape of the trip. Montevideo and Colonia del Sacramento are the cheapest bases for a first visit and both work as an add-on to Buenos Aires by ferry. The Atlantic coast (Punta del Este, Cabo Polonio) is where prices climb, and where a beach hotel in January can run US$200–500 a night. If your dates are flexible, aim for the shoulder months and treat the coast as two or three nights rather than a week.
On the ground, the backpacker pattern is simple: hostel dorm or a shared room, supermarket and market food with the occasional chivito, and buses between cities. Montevideo city buses cost about US$1–1.50, and the Montevideo–Punta del Este bus runs US$12–15. Long-distance buses are the default way to move around the country; there is no useful passenger rail network, so plan around road transport.
Food is where budgets are won or lost. A chivito sandwich runs US$12–20, a parrilla meal at Mercado del Puerto US$30–50, coffee US$3–5 and a litre of beer US$4–7. Cooking in a hostel kitchen or buying picnic food from supermarkets and markets cuts a day's food to US$20–30. Restaurants are cheaper outside the capital and outside the coast.
Keep the VAT rule in mind: non-residents paying with a foreign card get the 22% VAT removed at restaurants, bars and cafés and on car hire in the summer season (about 15 Nov – 30 Apr) and on hotel stays. The discount usually appears on the receipt, but the rules change, so confirm before you rely on it. Paying by card also avoids ATM fees, which vary between Banred and RedBrou machines.
