Uruguaiana
One night, or a border crossing: Uruguaiana is a transit town, not a destination. Stay only if you cross to Paso de los Libres or break a long bus.
Uruguaiana sits on the Argentina border in far west Rio Grande do Sul, roughly equidistant from Buenos Aires, Asunción and Montevideo. It is a working border city with a handful of sights, cheap food and hotels, and a bridge to Paso de los Libres. Most travellers use it as a gateway, not a base.

Get around
The centre is walkable. City buses cover the rest; fare about R$3.50. Mototaxis are cheap for short hops. To cross the bridge to Paso de los Libres, use the international commuter bus (about 30 min, R$8, no Sunday service) or a mototaxi to Brazilian immigration, then walk or hitch across the long bridge.
