Urbana
Urbana, Ohio
Give Urbana one night, two at most: a small county-seat downtown, an aviation museum and Johnny Appleseed's memorabilia in half a day.
Urbana is the seat of Champaign County in western Ohio, population about 11,400, on US Route 68 between Springfield and Bellefontaine. It is a car stop, not a destination in itself: a compact Victorian downtown around Monument Square, a volunteer-run aviation museum at Grimes Field, and the Johnny Appleseed museum. Most travellers see it in a half day and sleep one night, or use it as a base for the Simon Kenton Trail and the countryside around Springfield and Bellefontaine.

Get around
A car is the practical way to reach Urbana and to see the aviation museum and the out-of-town sights; US-68 runs through town and I-70 is about 15 min south. Downtown is walkable in 10–15 min end to end. The Simon Kenton Trail is a paved shared-use path for bikes and walking, running north towards West Liberty and Bellefontaine and south towards Springfield. There is no useful local bus network for visitors; taxis and rideshare are thin, so plan around your own vehicle.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Small-town hours: many downtown shops and the historical museum keep limited days — check before you drive out.
- Museum and fair dates change year to year; confirm on the official sites before a special trip.
- Winter ice and deer on US-68 and the county roads after dark.
- Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on rural back roads.
- Weekend hotel rooms fill during fair week and college events; book ahead.
Urbana is a small, quiet county seat and feels safe by day and evening; the real risks are winter ice, deer on rural roads after dark and thin services late at night. Lock the car and keep to lit streets downtown.
