Uranium City
Go only if you have a reason to be here: fly in, sleep 1–2 nights, walk the townsite and fish Lake Athabasca. No road, no hospital, no nightlife.
Uranium City is a near-abandoned mining settlement of about 90 people on the north shore of Lake Athabasca, 724 km northwest of Prince Albert. There is no permanent road in; you arrive on a scheduled flight from Saskatoon or Prince Albert. Come for the lake, the fishing, the sand dunes and the quiet, not for services.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- No permanent road in or out: the winter road to Fond-du-Lac is seasonal and Fond-du-Lac itself is air-only.
- No hospital in the community since 2003; medical care means a flight out. Carry prescriptions and a first-aid kit.
- Cell and internet coverage is limited and can drop; download offline maps and tell someone your plans.
- Fuel, food and supplies are flown in: expect high prices and bring what you need.
- Bears and remote terrain: travel with a local guide on the land and store food properly.
- Athabasca Sand Dunes Provincial Park has no onsite services; check with a conservation officer before visiting and use a licensed outfitter.
Remote and lightly serviced: the real risks are medical distance, weather, wildlife and getting stranded, not crime. Tell someone your plans and carry a way to call for help.
