Urana
Skip as a destination, stop 1–2 hours if you are driving the Newell or Riverina Highway: a pub, a lake bed and a courthouse museum that needs a booking.
Urana is a Riverina town of about 340 people between Wagga Wagga and the Newell Highway. There is no fuel, no supermarket beyond a small IGA, one working pub and a lake that is usually dry. It works as a leg-stretch, a pub lunch or one night in a cabin, not as a base for the region.

Language
English everywhere, with a fast, informal Australian style: shortened words (arvo, servo, brekkie), 'mate' for anyone and irony as default. Place names across the country come from Aboriginal languages, and signs increasingly use dual names.
- Ask what a place is called in the local language on tours; many parks now use dual names (Uluru / Ayers Rock, K'gari / Fraser Island).
- 'How are you going?' is a greeting, not a question needing a full answer.
Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No fuel is sold in Urana: fill up in Wagga Wagga, Narrandera or Corowa before you arrive.
- The lake at the Aquatic Centre is often dry; birdwatching only works after good rain.
- Courthouse Museum entry is free but must be arranged in advance through the shire council.
- The larger Royal George Hotel is closed; the smaller Urana Hotel is the one trading.
- The pub's posted closing time is 23:00 Mon–Sat and 22:00 Sun, but it often shuts much earlier on weeknights.
- Summer heat: plan driving and walking for the morning.
Very low crime; the real risks are heat, long empty drives and wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk. Mobile coverage is patchy outside town.
