Upper Egypt is the Nile Valley between Luxor and Aswan: the pharaoh tombs and the big temples, plus a string of smaller temple towns that sit on one road and one rail line. Sleep in Luxor and Aswan, where the beds and food are, and cover the middle by cruise, by train stops or by a driver. Two bases plus one transfer beats three hotel changes.

Bags between cities
Luggage forwarding between Luxor and Aswan hotels is not a standard service; most travellers leave bags at the hotel or take them on the cruise. If you move by train or driver, keep bags with you — the temple-town stops have no left-luggage worth relying on.
