Unity
Give Unity one night if you are driving Highway 14 or riding The Canadian; skip it as a destination on its own.
Unity is a farming town of about 2,500 people where Highway 14 meets Highway 21, roughly 200 km west-northwest of Saskatoon and 375 km southeast of Edmonton. It has one museum, one golf course, a handful of places to eat and two beds worth booking. The reason to stop is the drive or the train, not the town.

Get around
You need a car. The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes, but the museum, the golf course and the highway services are spread out and there is no local bus. VIA Rail's The Canadian stops at Unity station on Main Street and 1st Avenue, but only a few times a week in each direction: check the timetable before you plan around it.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances are long and services thin: fill the tank in Biggar or Kindersley, not in Unity.
- Winter driving on Highway 14 and Highway 21 can close without much warning: check the highway conditions before you leave.
- The train stops here a few times a week at most, often in the middle of the night: check the timetable and the station before you book.
- Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on the back roads.
A quiet prairie town with little street crime. The real risks are winter driving, long gaps between fuel stops and wildlife on the highway at dusk.
