United States in November: what to expect

November is a transition month across the country. The Northeast and Midwest turn cold and grey, with the first snow possible in the Great Lakes and northern New England; the Rockies and high parks are already in winter, and the Going-to-the-Sun, Beartooth and Trail Ridge roads close for the season. The desert Southwest cools into comfortable park weather, and South Florida, Hawaii and the Gulf coast stay warm and mostly dry.

Expect rain on the Pacific Northwest and California coasts, and occasional storm systems sweeping the East. Daylight saving time ends on the first Sunday of the month, so afternoons get dark early — plan indoor museums, shows and food for the late afternoon.

The first three weeks of November are one of the quietest stretches of the US travel year: schools are in session, the summer crowds are gone and the holiday rush has not started. Hotels in New York, Boston, Washington and Chicago often run below their October rates, and national-park gateway towns are close to empty.

Everything changes for Thanksgiving, the fourth Thursday of the month. The Wednesday before and the Sunday after are the heaviest domestic travel days of the year, and the whole week is expensive for flights, rental cars and hotels near family destinations. If your dates are fixed to that week, book early and expect airport queues.

Veterans Day (11 November) creates a long weekend in some years and adds a small bump at theme parks and in Washington, D.C.

November is a big month for American sport and food. The baseball season ends with the World Series in late October or early November, college football fills Saturdays, and the NFL plays through the month. Thanksgiving itself is the event: a family holiday with parades, football and a turkey dinner, followed by Black Friday sales on 27 November 2026.

Elsewhere, New York City runs the marathon on the first Sunday, and the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is usually lit in early December, not November. Pick your region by weather, not by a single national answer. South Florida, the Keys, Hawaii and the desert Southwest are the strongest choices: warm days, dry skies and parks at comfortable temperatures. The Deep South and Gulf coast — New Orleans, Savannah, Charleston, Nashville — are mild and pleasant, with the hurricane season ending on 30 November.

In the Northeast, November is a city month. New York, Washington and Boston work well for museums, theatre and food, with fewer queues than in October. Washington, D.C. in particular is good value: the monuments and the Smithsonian museums stay open and the crowds thin out.

The Rockies and northern national parks are not a good fit unless you want early-season skiing or snowshoeing; most high roads and many park facilities close in October or early November. The Pacific Northwest is wet, so plan indoor days or head south.

Pack for two climates if you are crossing the country: a warm-weather layer for Florida or the desert, and a proper winter coat, hat and gloves for the Northeast, Midwest and mountains. Layers work better than one heavy coat in the South, where mornings are cool and afternoons mild.

Bring a compact umbrella or rain shell for the coasts, comfortable walking shoes for city days, and a swimsuit if you are heading to Florida, Hawaii or a hotel with a pool. A power bank helps on long travel days, and a small day bag is useful for Thanksgiving airport queues.

October is the best all-round month in the US: foliage in New England, comfortable desert parks and cooler cities, though high mountain roads start closing late in the month. December brings holiday lights in New York and the start of ski season, with peak prices around Christmas and New Year.

September is a strong shoulder month after Labor Day, with parks still open and lower crowds, but Florida and the Gulf sit at hurricane peak. January is the cheapest and quietest month, best for Florida, Hawaii and the desert Southwest.
