United States in autumn: weather, crowds and things to do

Autumn in the United States is not one season. The country spans six climate zones, so a single forecast is meaningless: on the same October day you can have warm desert weather in Phoenix, mild conditions in New York and snow at altitude in Colorado.

The Northeast cools fast. September still feels like summer in New York, Boston and Washington, then late September to October turns dry and mild, which is why that window is the best of the year for walking cities and leaf-peeping in New England and the Appalachians. November is colder and greyer, with the first snow in inland Maine and upstate New York.

The Southeast and Florida stay warm, but this is the tail of hurricane season, which runs June to November and peaks August to October. South Florida is hot and wet in September, drier and more pleasant by November. The Gulf and Deep South (New Orleans, Houston, Atlanta, Nashville) are comfortable from late September, though storms can still reach the coast.

The Midwest and Great Lakes have warm September days and crisp October ones, with the first frost in Minneapolis by late October. The Rockies and the big parks are excellent in September and early October, but snow can fall at altitude any month, and the high passes start closing from late October. The desert Southwest is at its best: Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce and Death Valley become walkable again after the 40–45 °C summer. The California coast is mild through autumn, with the first rain usually arriving in November (check).

Autumn is the shoulder season, and that is the main reason to come. Crowds fall sharply after Labor Day (the first Monday of September), when American families go back to school. National parks stay open with far fewer people, hotel rates drop outside the big cities, and you can often book popular campgrounds and park lodges weeks rather than months ahead.

The exceptions matter. New England foliage weekends in late September and October fill small towns in Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, and leaf-peeping drives can be slow. Columbus Day weekend (second Monday of October) is a busy long weekend nationwide. Thanksgiving week in late November is the busiest travel period of the year: airports, highways and rental cars all peak, and prices jump.

City hotels in New York, Boston, Washington and San Francisco are busy with business travel and conferences in September and October, so weekend rates can be higher than midweek. In the desert Southwest, autumn is the main park season, so Grand Canyon and Zion villages fill on weekends; go midweek if you can.

Autumn is the best season for the country's two signature activities: leaf-peeping and desert hiking. New England, the Adirondacks, the Catskills, the Berkshires and the Blue Ridge in North Carolina all turn in October, with the peak moving south as the month goes on. Drive, walk or take a scenic rail line; the towns along the way are the point as much as the trees.

In the West, the desert parks come back to life. Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Canyon Country and the Mogollon Rim are comfortable for hiking in October and November, and the Rockies parks (Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Rocky Mountain) are quieter than in summer, with elk rutting in September. Wildlife watching is good, but some services close from late October.

Cities are at their most walkable. New York, Boston, Washington, Chicago and San Francisco have mild days and long evenings in September and early October, plus the start of the cultural season: theatre, museums and concerts. Halloween (31 October) brings events nationwide, and Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday of November) is a family holiday rather than a tourist one, though parades and American football draw visitors.
