United States in April: what to expect

April is a transition month, so the answer depends entirely on where you go. The desert Southwest (Phoenix, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Zion) is in its best window: warm days, cool nights, low rain. The South and the Gulf coast (New Orleans, Savannah, Charleston, Atlanta, Nashville) are comfortable before the summer humidity arrives. The California coast is often at its clearest of the year.

The Northeast and Midwest are a gamble: mild sunny days alternate with cold rain, and a late snowstorm is possible in New England and the Great Lakes. The Rockies and northern national parks are still winter — Yellowstone and Glacier are largely closed to cars, and the high passes stay shut until about June. South Florida is warm and mostly dry, but the first heavy spring storms can appear late in the month.

Crowds sit at medium: spring break has mostly finished by early April, but Easter week and school holidays keep popular cities and parks busy. Washington, D.C. is the single busiest case, because the cherry blossoms draw large domestic crowds and hotel rates spike around them. Book that city early or go after the bloom.

Prices are medium and clearly below the June–August peak. Flights into hub airports are usually cheaper than in summer, and rental cars are easier to find than in July. The exceptions are cherry-blossom week in Washington, Easter weekend, and any major event city such as Boston on Patriots' Day or Louisville during Derby week.

April's calendar is dominated by spring festivals, the end of the ski season and the start of the baseball season. Dates move every year, so confirm before booking around one.

Build the trip around the regions that are in season. The Southwest is the strongest pick: Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce and the desert parks are comfortable, and spring wildflowers appear in the lower desert. The South works well too — New Orleans, Savannah, Charleston and the Great Smoky Mountains are green and mild before the summer heat.

Washington, D.C. is worth timing to the cherry blossoms if you accept the crowds, and New York City is pleasant for walking once you pack a rain jacket. On the West Coast, the California coast and the Bay Area are often at their clearest. Avoid the northern Rockies and Glacier, where most roads and services are still shut.

Pack layers rather than one heavy coat: April swings from cold mornings to warm afternoons in most of the country. A waterproof shell and comfortable broken-in shoes matter more than anything else, because rain is common in the East and Midwest.

Add sunscreen and a hat for the Southwest, where the sun is strong at altitude, and a warm mid-layer plus gloves if you are going above 2,000 m. If you plan to drive mountain roads, check conditions daily — some passes are still closed.

March is similar but colder and wetter in the North, with spring break filling Florida. May is warmer and greener, and Memorial Day at the end of the month starts the summer season and timed-entry systems at some parks. June opens the Rockies and northern parks but brings high crowds, high prices and desert heat.
