United Kingdom in October: what to expect

October is the UK's transition month: the Atlantic still delivers mild, wet air, but the sun is low and days shorten fast. London and the south-east are the mildest and driest part of the country; the north-west of England, Wales and western Scotland take the most rain, and Highland glens can already see the first snow on the tops late in the month.

October sits in the middle band: schools are back for most of the month, so London, York, Bath and Edinburgh are noticeably calmer than in August, and hotel rates fall with them. If your dates fall in a school holiday week, family attractions, cottages and trains fill again and prices rise.

The month's fixed points are Halloween on 31 October and the clock change in the last week, when the UK moves to Greenwich Mean Time and evenings darken by an hour. Bonfire Night falls in November, not October, so fireworks displays mostly start after the month ends.

Autumn food and drink events, literary festivals and family programmes run across the country; dates change each year, so confirm before you build a trip around one.

Cities are the safest bet: London for museums, theatre and markets, Edinburgh for the Old Town without the August festival crush, and York, Bath or Oxford for a compact two- or three-night stop. All work in rain because most of what you came for is indoors.

For autumn colour, the classic picks are the Lake District, the Cotswolds, the Scottish Highlands around Perthshire and the Great Glen, and the Welsh borders. Daylight is the constraint: by late October a hill day is short, so start early and carry a head torch. Coastal Cornwall and the islands are quieter and cheaper than in summer but more exposed to wind and ferry disruption.

Build the kit around wet and wind rather than deep cold. A waterproof shell with a hood, a warm mid-layer, trousers that dry quickly and shoes with grip cover almost every October day. Add a compact umbrella for cities, where wind is broken by buildings, and a hat and gloves for Scotland, the hills and any evening outdoors.

Days are short, so a small torch or phone light is useful on country lanes and after late events. If you plan to walk, take a paper map or an offline map: signal is patchy in the Highlands, Snowdonia and parts of the south-west.

September is usually the better walking month: schools are back, the ground is drier and daylight lasts longer. November is darker, wetter and cheaper, with Christmas lights and markets opening late in the month. If your dates are fixed to October, aim for the first three weeks.
