Unawatuna
Base here 2–3 nights for a calm bay and easy Galle access; skip it if you want surf, whale trips or a fort-town base — those are Weligama, Mirissa and Galle.
Unawatuna is a small beach suburb about 5 km south of Galle, built around one sheltered bay with a reef that takes the sting out of the swell. It is a sleep-and-eat base rather than a sightseeing town: the fort, the station and the buses are all in Galle, and the coast road runs straight through. Two or three nights is enough, and it pairs naturally with Galle Fort.

Get around
The A2 coast road is the spine; the beach lane (Yaddehimulla Road) runs off it. Tuk-tuks are the practical way to move around and to Galle — agree the fare before you get in. Local buses to Galle run frequently and cost a few tens of rupees. Walking works inside the bay area, but the road has no real footpath.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: 'Ayubowan' (Sinhala) or 'Vanakkam' (Tamil) with palms together; avoid: Kissing on the cheek
- Temples: White clothes, shoes off, walk clockwise; avoid: Posing with your back to the Buddha; pointing feet at statues
- Hands: Right hand to give and eat; avoid: Left hand for food or money
- Head wobble: A side-to-side nod means yes or OK; avoid: Taking it as no
- Dress: Swimwear only on the beach; shoulders and knees covered in towns; avoid: Topless bathing
- Buses: Leave front seats for monks, the elderly and pregnant women; avoid: Sitting next to a monk (women)
Scams and watch-outs
- Off-season boat and tour touts push hard and sometimes renegotiate the price mid-trip: fix the total in writing or on your phone first.
- The reef makes the bay calm, but there are no lifeguards on most stretches: swim in the middle of the bay, not near the rocks.
- Climbing the rock island in the bay is not recommended.
- May–September brings rough seas and red-flag days; some beach businesses shut.
- ATMs are limited — one on the main road near the cafés, otherwise use Galle.
- Currents and debris after heavy rain; ask locally before swimming.
Unawatuna is a relaxed beach base and violent crime against visitors is rare. The real risks are the sea in monsoon months, scooter and tuk-tuk traffic on the A2, and off-season tour touts who change the price mid-trip.
