Unalaska
Unalaska / Dutch Harbor
Go only if you have a reason: WWII history, birding, fishing or work. Two nights is enough; flights cancel often, so add a buffer day.
Unalaska sits on Unalaska and Amaknak islands in the Aleutians, about 1,300 km southwest of Anchorage. Amaknak is Dutch Harbor, the port and airport side. There is one hotel, a handful of taxis, no rental cars for casual visitors and weather that cancels flights. Come for the Aleutian WWII National Historic Area, the Russian church, the Museum of the Aleutians and the birds, not for a resort.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Most land outside town is Ounalashka Corporation native land: hiking or camping needs a land use permit, and the Mount Ballyhoo WWII site needs one too.
- Storms can bring wind gusts over 200 km/h and change conditions fast: carry layers, waterproofs and check NOAA forecasts before any long walk.
- Flights to and from Anchorage cancel in bad weather; keep a spare day before an onward connection.
- There is one hotel and few beds: book weeks ahead in summer and fishing season.
Low crime, high weather risk. The real dangers are wind, cold water and cancelled flights: tell someone your plan, carry waterproofs and never walk the shoreline in a storm.
