Umm al Quwain
أمّ القيوين
One night, only if you want a cheap quiet beach base between Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah; otherwise day-trip the fort and lagoon from Dubai or Sharjah.
Umm al Quwain is the smallest emirate: a low-rise peninsula town on Khor al Beidah with a restored fort museum, a working dhow yard, mangrove islands and a handful of beach resorts. There is no airport, no public bus and little nightlife. It works as a one-night stop or a half-day trip for the lagoon, the museum and Al-Dur, not as a full holiday base.

Get around
No public buses. Taxis serve the centre and the highway resorts, but supply is thin and fares are not posted: ask the price before you get in and keep a local number for the return leg. A rental car makes the emirate far easier, especially for the camel track road and Falaj Al Mualla.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Right hand, a smile, 'as-salamu alaykum'; let a woman offer her hand first; avoid: Hugging or kissing in greeting in public
- Dress in public: Shoulders and knees covered in malls, souks and government buildings; avoid: Swimwear or very short clothing away from the beach or pool
- Mosques: Covered arms and legs, headscarf for women, shoes off; visit outside prayer times; avoid: Loud talk and photos of people praying
- Photography: Ask before photographing people and their children; avoid: Photos of women, police, government and military sites, or accident scenes; posting others' photos without consent is a crime
- Public behaviour: Stay calm and polite in disputes; hold hands at most; avoid: Kissing, swearing, rude gestures and shouting — all can lead to fines or arrest
- Online: Keep posts neutral about the country, its rulers and religion; avoid: Insulting posts, reviews that defame named people, or sharing others' images; cybercrime laws are strict
- Ramadan: Eat and drink out of public view in daylight; greet with 'Ramadan kareem'; avoid: Loud music, eating on the street, revealing clothing
- Emirati hospitality: Accept coffee and dates; sit with feet on the floor; avoid: Showing the soles of your feet; refusing everything
Scams and watch-outs
- UAE law applies: do not eat or drink in public during Ramadan, avoid offensive behaviour, and dress modestly away from resort beaches.
- Do not drive without a licence and watch for speed cameras; limits drop sharply in town.
- Alcohol is sold at resort outlets, not in general shops; IDs may be asked for.
- Summer heat and humidity are dangerous for walking between midday and late afternoon.
- Some listed hotels and venues change names or close: check before booking.
Very low street crime; the real issues are heat, driving rules and public-behaviour law, which is enforced across the UAE.
